CAROL’S STORY
I grew up in the 1960’s and 70’s in Klemzig, in an area of mixed cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic status. My parents were immigrant refugees from Polish and Czech backgrounds, arriving in Australia post World War II with their families, who were always grateful for the opportunity to settle in Australia, despite their hardships experienced along the way. As a child, I came to value empathy and kindness as important traits and finding ways to experience pleasure and enjoyment from simple things, such as music and time spent with family.
I became inspired to work as a psychologist when I met my husband Quentin, who shared similar values and had an amazing drive and commitment to social justice and helping others. Starting in private practice in 1997 was tough and many people were unable to afford psychological services. When Medicare rebates were introduced I remember feeling relieved that more people would be able to access services and get the help they needed.
I obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical and Health Psychology from Adelaide University in 1997 and have been working as a psychologist for almost 20 years. I have a broad range of experience in the assessment and treatment of a range of clinical disorders, with a particular interest in mood and anxiety disorders and drug and alcohol co-morbidities. I have also worked as a consultant psychologist in the rehabilitation industry, in addition to my private practice providing assessment and treatment services to injured workers. Whilst I have worked with children, adolescents and adults over the years, my focus is now predominantly with adults.
As an owner and director of PsychMed I am proud to be able to offer a bulk-billing service and know that people don’t have to worry about how they are going to afford to access help. I am grateful to work with like-minded colleagues and staff members who prioritise access to services and know that their care is based on true generosity and belief in the profession and the services we offer. We aim to provide a family oriented, professional and caring atmosphere, where people will feel comfortable and at home.
